BIO
Ulku Caglayan is a practice-led artist working across performance and
facilitation. 
She uses performance as a generative process through
which text, spoken word, sound, installation, and moving image emerge.

Drawing from dream states, pre-verbal experience and embodied
imagination, she creates situations that examine how human behaviour
emerges in real time.

She is a facilitator of the Social Dreaming Matrix and is also trained
in Intimacy Coordination for film.

Her first artist book, Making Sense, is distributed by institutions
including Printed Matter, Claire de Rouen, and Jameel Arts Centre.
She was also the founder of Circuit, a socially engaged arts and culture

ARTIST STATEMENT












Her work is invested in ethics and politics of rehearsals, workshops and foregrounds radical togetherness. 
She uses these structured environments to create visceral performancess and guides them through improvised speech and readings from constructed texts where trust, attention, imagination and relational dynamics become active elements of the work itself.

	2023 WE WERE NEVER MEANT TO SURVIVE, Video, 8.30’Proposing a speculative world where I imagine humanity on a battlefield and see desire as the key to cultivate resilience. In this performance for the camera, a group of non-trained performers come together to pre-enact this speaculative scenario and prepare mentally &#38;amp; emotionally for death and dying together.

With sound design and musical composition by 
 Ayse Zeynep Hatipoglu &#38;amp; Metehan Kokturk, Conceived to embody the scores and the cues of the accompanying the performance it incorporates my spoken word performance, drawn from the text I have composed and used for the direction of the performance.

The musical composition blends electronic sounds with a stylistic change of instruments such as violoncello, electric guitar, darbuka. It has manipulations over the acoustic instruments and repetitive and strict rhythmic lines to&#38;nbsp; reflects the imminent state of being.

	2023 BRINK OF THE ABYSS, 2-metre Glass bow, string, animal fur and four arrows
This work is the imminent state of transformative experiences such as an implosive orgasm, love or death.
 
In spite of the rigid and static form of the suspended arrow and bow they convey a sense of readiness to shoot.

Made from glass its non-flexible structure paradoxically emphasizes the significance of war rituals and the necessity of thoughtful consideration before violence. 
This weapon specifically utilizes vagina fluids for intentional killings on the battlefield.
 
Referring to Georges Bataille’s definition of the erotic as sexuality unto death or the brink, the erotic becomes a lacerating force that leads to the completely other or dissolution.

	2023 POLYANDROGYNOUSTUNNEL FOR CONTINUOUS BARDOS,

In a realm where bodies turn into battlefields, the womb becomes a sacred sanctuary. 

This polytunnel serves as a space for communal death, acting as a shelter amid the battleground.

With its nature as a protective structure to cultivate yields it serves as a place to repair the collective traumas produced by the patriarchal, heteronormative and mononormative paradigms. 
It is a site of resistance, birth and dying to illuminate the fragility and specificity of articulations of sex, bodies, and natures suggesting new practices of ecological knowledges, spaces, politics.

	2022 HEAD TO HEAD, Performance, Social Experiment/Method, Wordplay &#38;amp; Imagery Istanbul Cinema Museum, Istanbul
In this performance, I brought together a group of non-trained performers who were directed to enact the state of upheaval of the myth called “The Cut Heads”–-rebellious heroes who embrace death rather than a lifeless existence dictated by those who are the head of the social contract.&#38;nbsp; 
The subtle bodily process research sought to invent a method for a speculative post-human, with bodies hidden in their heads, investigating how individuals or communities navigate fear and tense limbo through embodied imagination.

2020 MAKING SENSE, Research Creation,&#38;nbsp;Live Performance, Intervention&#38;nbsp; Installation, Publishing, Performance for Video

Istanbul, Bergama

These questions became a material envisaging a potential to become a collective adventure without necessarily as a communicative practice. As part of her performance the artist collects 65 beautiful questions from 9 specific people consisting of artists, dancers and thinkers by asking them one single question.

 In the live performance she “plays” with these questions offering two directions; an invitation to savor and relish the words and an invitation to withdraw from their imprisoning nature. She emphasizes the heaviness of intellectual processes by using the power of beautiful questions reflecting her fraught and paradoxical relationship with language and with thought.
